astropolis records brings out its 7th release, welcoming a distinguished guest from scotland. vince watson, the glasgow-based producer, chose the french melodic techno label to release elektrik. his previous productions saw the likes of cocoon, planet e, ovum, tresor and very soon transmit or rebids ... granting him worldwide reputation.
elektrik is a deep, emotional piece of melodious techno that can be relished at home as well as on a massive dancefloor. dark chords, enticing bassline coupled to downy reverb progressively unfurls vince watson’s flair, grasping the audience for a 9-minute journey to a crepuscular, hypnotic and colourful universe.

bartellow has long been associated with the esp institute though tambien, a trio formed alongside bavarian cohorts marvin and valentino, who have released seminal dancefloor material over recent years. with his debut album panokorama, we are invited into a completely different world of bartellow s creation a place where influences become a melting pot of mood, nuance and texture, and where instrumentation is abstracted from a variety of cultures, including those that exist solely within his imagination. bartellow has found a way to merge primitivism with retrofuturism, identifying their point of intersection and reveling in their union across ten songs. while his academic background as a jazz musician certainly informs both his progressive approach to composition and non-linear production, it is his obsession with electronics and synthesis that shape his current musical climate. the title panokorama stems from bartellows visualization of the album, a surreal landscape with a foreign presence centrally embedded, a panorama punctuated by a ko, although a hybrid word that reads as nonsense, it somehow feels and sounds just right.

mihai popoviciu has carved out a reputation for being one of the most innovative producers of electronic music active in europe today. the man from romania has established himself both as a highly respected producer releasing on labels such as highgrade, international gigolo and dessous and as a killer dj performing all over the world. fiction is his 4th release on poker flat recordings, and delivers four distinct flavours to sink your teeth into. i should is a slinky groover, with a slippery, evolving bassline, tight, funky percussion and a sultry female vocal. working just as effectively early in a set as a peak time moment, its bound to get rinsed in the coming months. twisted is a little harder - a straighter beat signals a more heads down approach, and the bassline is sure to trigger some dancefloor scenes wherever it gets played. next up is title track fiction which perhaps makes a reference to mihai’s background, with fragments of eastern european melodies woven into the beautiful synth work, all tied together over a spacey yet driving rhythm track. last but by no means least is interconnected - a straight up deep bomb with echoes of classic chicago deep and acidic house in its warm and sensual vibe.

if you’re setting out on an epic voyage to the electronic disco universe, it pays to recruit an experienced pilot. when it comes to intergalactic musical fusion, few are quite as experienced as cosmic disco pioneer and noted dancefloor explorer daniele baldelli. produced alongside friend and regular studio partner dario piana, zero gravity cannily updates baldelli’s early ‘80s cosmic disco blueprint for the 21st century. we think that the ep contains some of his strongest music to date, with each of the three cuts offering subtle nods to the italian maestro’s original cosmic club ethos. a-side “infinity machine” expertly combines many of baldelli’s greatest musical inspirations into one mind-bending late night workout. underpinned by a druggy, arpeggio style bassline, the track rises and falls through waves of funk-rock guitars, crunchy clavinet lines and intertwined synthesizer solos. throw in jammed-out electric pianos, and you have a near perfect fusion of cosmic disco and blazed funk-rock. the producer’s long-held love of african rhythms surfaces on “if you drive”, where bold acid bass, ricocheting percussion hits and weightless chords combine beautifully with starry melody lines and vintage analogue synthesizer motifs. it’s afro-cosmic for the nu-disco generation. a fine ep is completed by “air lock”, in which baldelli and piana pepper a rubbery, electrofunk-influenced groove with cascading synthesizer melodies, swirling pads and a swathe of fuzzy, eyes-closed guitar solos. it’s bold and assertive, but also as otherworldly and stratospheric as you’d expect from a pioneer at the peak of his powers.

chicago house legend mystic bill joins crimes of the future with two straight up jacking house tracks with bonus instrumental and a mind bending remix by scott fraser. bill torres needs little introduction to those fans of the original chicago movement in the late 1980 s and 1990 s, he produced a string of 12inches for the likes of trax and relief records whilst playing and holding down dj residences in some of the citties best loved venues. after remixing scott fraser s no word of truth release last year on his dx recordings label his first full solo release on crimes of the future has arrived.the a cut frequency 9 is a rolling jacker with rattling percussion and dark synth stabs to dement the warehouse dancefloor and very much in the line of bills trademark style. a2 sees fraser return the remix favour delivering a massive floor bumping remix adding all new drums, 303 and huge bassline giving a nod to the classic sound of those sex trax/ power music 12s from the 1990 s with his 11 minute mind control remix. the frequency cannot be controlled! side b has both the original and a bonus intrumental of the ship is sinking, a dark slice of jacking house complete with real tension and total mastery of the sampler for those able to spot it.

one half of laszlo dancehall with leon vynehall, christian piers returns to duskys 17 steps with three tracks of machine driven music aimed at the dancefloor. leading with the heavyweight techno of detachment, the package also includes the dark mechanical rhythms of expanse and drum workout strain, as well as trevinos stripped back dub techno interpretation of detachment.

mechanisms industries owner fanon flowers extends the prrukblk catalog with a slice of wax in his signature style. vivid synth work with repetitive sequences that linger through the listeners mind long after the initial listen. “strong interaction” ep is combined of 4 dancefloor cuts on the moody side of things. beautiful patches and lucid hats come together in a wash of dancefloor oriented techno.

on the a side you can find “icebreaker” solely, an eccentric sound with a steady bassline, percussive kicks, tripping shakers and a thoughtful, mysterious melody that touches all the frequencies of your body. turning to the b side we find “swingenious”, a groovier interpretation produced by a combination of spacey feelings and sophisticated instruments that will move every bone on the dancefloor. closing the ep is “in memoriam”, a melancholic version that is not short of an aggressive bassline, ambiguous vocals and deep introspects, all aligned to disconnect you from the reality of routine.

ultimate block party breaks volume 4 continues the tradition that began in the bronx in the 1970’s, where “break djs” would take that one part of the record that dancers would go absolutely crazy for. that part where all the music breaks down to nothing but the essence: drums and percussion. these are all truly timeless beats that sound as fresh today as they did when the founding fathers like kool herc, bam, flash and hollywood were catching them for the frst time in community centers throughout the city. we’ve edited and extended these breaks for maximum effect on the dancefloor - so you don’t have to. enjoy!

a mainstay in the underground house music scene for almost twenty years, joeski makes his next move on the mighty crosstown rebels with a sublime ‘tribute ep’ to the great divinity obatalá. the ep journeys through three tracks, where ethereal layers are used to infiltrate the dancefloor and varying tribal percussions, native chants and vocal haunts flow effortlessly throughout. from yoruba religion, obatalá is an orisha, sky father and creator of human bodies. joeski explains -i’ve been wanting to do this tribute for a while now. it’s a creative musical offering to obatalá. i feel like crosstown is the perfect home for it too.- joeski’s roots are in the underground house scene of nyc in the 90s, where he played regularly at historical clubs such as the limelight, tunnel, palladium and roxy. later establishing himself as a producer he began releasing music on nrk, siesta, shaboom, tango, junior boys own and many more. he also runs his successful label, maya records.

public releases hits the lab for some aural alchemy and to turn out its first release of 2017. a four-tracker from moscow’s phil gerus, scenes—or, in the producer’s native russian, &#1089,&#1094,&#1077,&#1085,&#1099,—manages to have a makeup that’s both peculiar and magnetic. the title’s a fitting one, every track feels like a vignette in a collection of short stories. separately, they’re self-contained, but a rich narrative arch is added when they’re sewn together. if there is a theme here, it’s of viewing the future through the dusty lens of the past, and each of the songs explores this in its own fashion. the kick-off, “ohashi sky garden,” starts as a hyped-up italo space epic, pumped full of swirling synth licks and sharp, tight drums, but it mutates into something completely its own when vocal samples (90s r&b?) and warm keys (prog rock rhodes?) enter. after the original’s brisk five minutes, the legendary richard sen—graffiti guy, breaks guy, house guy, disco guy, half-of-padded-cell guy—steps in to give it a trance-y tinge while doubling its runtime and adding a dancefloor-destroying hi-nrg coloration. the b begins with “naha swim,” a crunchy funk foot-stomper that might as well be an unreleased idjut boys or ray mang ditty dug up from the noid catacombs. fiery and furious, yet utterly cheeky. serving as a sort of coda to “naha” is “kiss of a kind,” a gerus take on 80s adult contemporary, replete with sleazy sax and sensual pads. a gentle nightcap to a zigzagging, antic 12-inch

in 1976, fela anikulapo kuti & afrika 70 released a total of 8 albums including the hit zombie. at the time of their height, tony allen, fela s drummer, decided to release a follow-up album to jealousy. progress was the result of a series of studio sessions, featuring fela himself with a tenor solo on the title-track. the b-side contains the dancefloor filler “afro disco beat”. . today, comet proudly presents the 2nd release of the tony allen & africa 70 (disco afro series): featuring remastered original versions of “afro disco beat” and remixes by africaine 808 & mexican institute of sound. africaine 808, the berlin-based duo of dirk leyers and dj nomad (hans reuschl), have been challenging the norm with their distinctive flavor of west african bass, rhythms and samples mixed into moreish disco and house tracks. camilo lara, known as the mexican institute of sound is a musician, remixer, producer, dj and label manager for casete records in mexico, which has distributed albums from artists such as radiohead, bjork, jamie xx and nick cave

lithuanian mainstay donatello first appeared on norman hs stripped label back in 2012, and hes since returned for repeat trips into warm, polished progressive house. now he appears alongside shane blackshaw for a rare outing on vinyl with the immersive groover catch 23. undulating chords and dubby fx processing make for an intoxicating blend on both the vocal and instrumental mixes of the lead track, while label regular kastis torrau gets busy on the flip with a more brooding version of the original, using a similarly delicate sound palette but turning it to noirish chord progressions for the darker dancefloor

from the twilight zone of rhythm section international comes a new label for 2017: international black. international black is the sound when the lights go off. recorded entirely on analogue hardware via reel to reel tape, this inaugural release features two hypnotic and timeless tracks from two of south london’s finest exponents of real house music. the record is made with the dancefloor in mind, channelling that moment in the club where things get dark, hypnotic, a bit weird and a lot more interesting.

late last year music for dreams released the digital album -debut- by bongo entp. this passion project from veteran studio session player jacob andersen brought us an unexpectedly fresh take on south american music traditions. on this new vinyl release, the project is both revisited and expanded upon. cherry picking some of the grooviest cuts from the album for this ep, we also get remix treatments from well sourced collaborators selvagem & carrot green. both hailing from brazil, these producers certainly know how to work latin percussion on a dancefloor. taking on the dreamy cover version of henri mancini’s classic -lujón- (original included too), carrot green ups the tempo and wrangles the elements of the original into something completely different. adding a house kick and dark acid undertones, he takes you on a wet trip with lots of twists and turns. the production duo of selvagem manage something similar with one of the looser bongo entp. jams. the original -foto feita do aviaõ is a jazzy scat sinaalong tune. in selvagem’s hands, it turns into an epic cosmic disco groover, locked into place by a muscular baseline. the vocal chants of the original are here, but used in a lower key and more sparingly to punctuate the bounce of the rhythm. the vinyl includes two other album highlights - the cafe del mar classic -el rey de pollo- , a santana-style chill-out affair featuring mikkel nordsø of bombay hotel fame and finally the moody -spanish winter- with its robotic reggae-like groove and syrup-thick synthesizers bubbling in a bittersweet fashion. a superb package.

after an amazing 2016 year remixing legend mobys porcelain for drumcode, releasing on labels like soma, drumcode (with his phoenix as well), kaputt ltd, planet rhythm, tip top, label owner luca agnelli is back on his own etruria beat. this new release contains 2 original cuts and 2 remixes by amazing artists abstract division and yotam avni. original tracks metamorphosis and chaos are very powerful techno tunes, filled with hypnotic looped chords, melodic synth stabs on solid beats and drops. dynamic reflections owner abstract division revisited metamorphosis in a very mental trippy way, adding a dutch raw and dark touch to the title. after a few releases on innervisions, stroboscopic artefact, yotam avni transformed metamorphosis into a pumping groovy track that can destroy any dancefloor. play it loud!
